A National Framework for Safe and Compliant Maritime Activity
Guatemala's maritime administration framework operates through the Ministry of National Defense and its specialized maritime bodies. Official functions include vessel registration and flagging, maritime inspection, implementation of applicable international maritime instruments, and the training and certification framework for seafarers.
The Directorate General of Maritime Affairs — Dirección General de Asuntos Marítimos (DIGEMAR) — carries out significant Flag State and Coastal State responsibilities and supports the implementation of international standards for maritime safety, security, efficient navigation and the prevention of pollution from ships.
